Menus and More

Welcome!
Please click these links for general wedding info or eclipse campout info. And don’t forget: Saturday 4p is a casual BYOB gathering at Dave’s! See the general info page for more.
Did you know that you’re less than a half-mile from Barton Springs, the natural creek-fed pool that’s the jewel in the heart of Austin?
Within Zilker Park’s 358 acres lies one of the crown jewels of Austin – Barton Springs Pool. The pool itself measures three acres in size, and is fed from underground springs with an average temperature of 68-70 degrees, ideal for year-round swimming. Over the years, Barton Springs Pool has drawn people from all walks of life, from legislators who have concocted state laws there to free-spirited, topless sunbathers who turned heads in the 1970s. Robert Redford learned to swim at the pool when he was five years old while visiting family in Austin. Today, Barton Springs still attracts a diverse crowd of people and has seen record setting numbers of visitors nearing 800,000 in recent years.
If you get a chance, we recommend paying it a visit. Here’s the route according to Google Maps, but Dave would recommend beelining it straight across to save time. Entry is currently $5 for locals and $9 for non-residents. You can see the pool from the road and the attendant may let you walk in just to take a photo.

In addition there’s a wonderful hike, the Violet Crown trail, that starts on the south side of the area.

Dave’s friend Logan recommends you visit this special eclipse sculpture if you have a chance. It’s about 12 minutes away by car in downtown Austin. You can park free for 30 minutes total at any meter using the Park ATX app and the discount codes FREE15ATX1 and FREE15ATX2 (those can be used daily, and yes you can use them in the same transaction).

Food

Are you hungry? Here’s what we have on tap for 5p.

Please step up and grab a plate for catered tacos on homemade tortillas with several meat and veggie options, plus three kinds of aguas frescas with optional tequila.

We also have six dozen tamales from Austin’s Tamaleo in spicy pork, spicy chicken with red mole, and black bean. Add a scoop of sour cream (if we have it, not sure ha ha) to the bean for what the proprietor says is a delish combo. More about the tamales below. One tamal per person, please!

Drink

In addition to the aguas frescas that arrive at 5p, we’ll be serving a variety of drinks, including beer, wine, tequila, and sparkling water.

Many thanks to Matthew Bey for generously donating the majority of the alcohol we’re serving today.

Our Wedding Hashtag

Forgive us, but we have a social media hashtag for the wedding so we can find all your amazing photos and videos. Flor’s daughter Becca has declared that the hashtag to use is…

#daveandflor2024

Cake

Hand-baked in Austin, the cake will come in three flavors:

Top tier – orange

Bottom tier (bigger level) – coconut (it’s amazing, we promise)

Sheet cake – red velvet

Centerpieces

The centerpieces have a little story, as well. Almost all of the foliage in the centerpieces came from Dave’s yard. The multicolored leaves with red berries? That’s nandina, which is non-toxic to humans, but don’t feed it to your cat.

Feel free to take a centerpiece if you like them!

Our Eclipse Authors

Are you still in need of eclipse glasses for Monday? Talk to writers Matthew Bey (giving a toast, if all goes to plan) and Nicky Drayden (Prey of Gods, Temper)! Their new book, Deep Austin, is the tale of a total eclipse in central Texas that confounds officials and creates a glut of epic madcap mayhem and adventure. Last we heard, purchasers of the book get a free pair of glasses. Also, Dave has spares, and Austin libraries are giving them out while supplies last.

Stay Heathy

If you’re not feeling 100%, or had recent COVID contact, please respect the other guests and do whatever is appropriate to keep them safe. We have a lot of guests with preexisting conditions. There should be a few masks at the registration table.

A Little Thank You

As you may know, Matthew, Dave, and another friend founded a speculative fiction/alt lit publication about ten years ago called Space Squid. As a thank-you for celebrating with us, later in the evening we will be sharing some Squid-themed goodies with you.

Curious about this publication? Well, we’d love for you to subscribe and read our free stories, and even help by writing, creating art, or helping to edit incoming stories. The most infamous episode in Squid history was when Matthew created a special edition of the magazine in clay, and WIRED blogged about it twice. These days, though, we mostly publish online, with a best-of-the-year print issue in the summer.

Would you like to check out a print issue in PDF form? Please do! Just go to spacesquid.com/promo and use the code SQUIDBAIT to download, free.

Tamales Part 2

So… we are told that these are celeb tamales.

Apparently Jennifer Lopez flew in some of these for her wedding to Marc Anthony, and Gore Vidal used to request them to enjoy with George and Barbara Bush when he was in Austin.

Funny anecdote about Billy, the co-owner of Tamaleo. He once went to a lecture by Austin writer and wit Claudia Alarcon. Claudia told the crowd that, according to Mayan legend, tamales were often the preferred food offering to the gods.

Billy: So what came first, the gods or the tamal?

Claudia: You know too much, Billy!

Team Tasks

Did you volunteer for one of our wedding teams? Here’s the info on how to help out. Coordinate shifts with your teammates and Doug Fels 713-877-8584 to share the work equally.

SETUP TEAM
Arrive at 230-3p if you can. You can arrive as early as 1230 if you are bored! Lots of great views at the garden, although please be respectful if others are using the space. Hope is our decorating czar and will take over at the site. Text her when you arrive, 51juan2 363-0ate13.
SETUP TEAM: FOOD AND DRINK TASKFORCE
Set up beverages, cups, and ice for people when they arrive at 3:30ish. Have a few cups of each type of beverage ready to go. Save the box wine for last.
Cupcakes and fruit can be served immediately using the napkins, eco-forks, and small plates. Leave space for a cake, which will come out after dinner.
We have collapsible food tents and a fly-repelling slow fan to keep insects away.
TEMPERANCE TEAM
Help people pick the right tequila for their agua fresca. Measure out tequila so people can just choose a flavor and dump a shot into their agua; we don’t want them to bother with pouring.
We don’t expect you to be a bartender or miss fun doing this, but just glance over every now and then and try to keep the drinks table from total chaos.
Keep an eye out for children (our food vendor will also be watching) and alert your coordinator if you see anyone who looks drunk. If you have issues don’t hesitate to call or text our venue contact who is attending: Fabi at 5juan2 97ate-1902.
CLEANUP TEAM
We’ll start at 9:15ish and must be out by 10. Dave will take the recycling home. He’s got plastic bags.
KJ DUTY
It’ll be Youtube. Jump on Dave’s laptop and queue up people’s songs using song request slips. To find the karaoke version of a song, just search “songname singer karaoke” and choose the one that looks most promising.
Call for the singer when the song is ready and advise them on not standing in front of the little amp. We’re starting karaoke with danceable songs only, saving the non-danceable requests for later. Also, if you know a song is likely to be inappropriate for kids, put it in the non-danceable group for later.
Make sure the sound is balanced. If the vocals are too loud, adjust the little vocals amp. If the background is too loud, adjust the big Crate amp.
